Prioritizing
Environmental Justice

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District is the second largest-land owner in Cook County. It’s time to rid the agency of toxic tenants who lease space from the district and pollute our waterways endangering the health and wellness of citizens and wildlife.

Communities on the South and West sides of Chicago are overwhelmingly impacted by urban flooding and are least likely to receive financial assistance for reported claims. I will move to build playgrounds with permeable pavement and add green infrastructure in these communities to advance community resilience and increase mentorship along with on the job training in the trades.

I will advocate for additional wetland parks, community landscaping, nature preserves, and bike trails for the public to experience the beauty of places like the Calumet River which was listed as one of the New York Times 52 destinations to inspire purposeful and fulfilling travel.

Managing Stormwater & Preventing Flooding

Cook County in particular is a place where rain barrels could become a part of the public discourse through collaboration with local artists designing and placing them in collaboration with The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District. Rain barrels are green infrastructure that collect rainwater and help prevent sewers become overwhelmed. Rain barrels support water reuse that can be used to water plants and lawns.

I will advocate for the completion of the McCook Reservoir (The Deep Tunnel) currently in stage II and on track to come on line by 2029. Since coming online the Thornton Reservoir has vastly improved the quality of the Chicago River, the Calumet River and other waterways where recreation and fish populations have both increased.

Action on Climate Change

I will motion for the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District to cut its greenhouse gas emissions by 50% with an ambitious timeline to implement infrastructure upgrades such as installing new primary treatment and grit removal systems across the seven plants that trap methane emissions and generate energy that can be returned to operate the plants.

The IPCC report on climate notes “taking action now can secure our future.” I will be clear that this includes removing the agency from participating in supporting the facilitation of creating methane gas.

I will advocate for the MWRD to begin research of bringing renewable energy generation using wind power as a source of aeration for its plants.

Glad to answer any and all questions about my qualifications and what I will continue to do as a Commissioner at the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago.
